DPL Financial Partners appoints Telebank, Jefferson National founder David Smilow to new board of directors

Entrepreneur brings over three decades of finance experience to RIA insurance platform

LOUISVILLE, KY. (February 17, 2021) – DPL Financial Partners (“DPL”), the leading insurance platform for registered investment advisors (RIAs), today announced the appointment of financial services entrepreneur David Smilow to its newly constituted board of directors. Smilow, currently managing partner of D. Aaron Asset Management, previously launched the first fully online bank, Telebank, and Jefferson National, a nationwide insurance carrier that pioneered the creation of Commission-Free insurance products suitable for RIAs and other fee-only advisors.

   
“David Smilow has been a partner and mentor throughout my career and provided invaluable advice as I was conceiving DPL, so he was a natural choice to become the firm’s first independent director,” said DPL Founder and CEO David Lau. “We collaborated at Telebank and Jefferson National and I’m honored and thrilled to be working with him again.”


Smilow echoed Lau’s remarks. “It’s great to be reuniting with David to help him realize his vision,” he said. “Years ago we both recognized the benefits of removing commissions from insurance products and with DPL, he has built a remarkable foundation for helping advisors and individual investors fully realize those benefits.”


The board ultimately will be comprised of five members. Smilow joins Lau and two board appointees to be named by DPL equity investors Eldridge and Atlas Merchant Capital LLC. Another independent director will be named in the coming weeks.
